- First things first. Lets get the terminology out of the way refinishing, resurfacing and reglazing are all metonyms they all are just words that refer to bonding a new surface to a bathtub, shower or tile surface. As with any business the words became popular as different people tried to make one sound more powerful than the other. Lol. Also, the slogans played a role: 'Don't replace, Refinish' ; 'The money you will save when you reglaze' ; 'When your Gloss reverses you can resurface'... okay the last one was just my attempt to through out my skills. I should probably just stick to what I have been doing for 22 years refinishing or is it reglazing no, no resurfacing.
- Now you see why our Industry is so confusing! Not only the terms used but now we answer the question : What is Refinishing? The consumer can easily become confused when they see the kit sold at home improvement stores that has BATHTUB, TILE REFINISHING written across it! So what I like to do is simply educate the consumer on Facts, not my opinion. The FACTS are:
- FACT: Refinishing is the process of Bonding a new surface to an old surface through chemical procedures.
- FACT: Refinishing does not involve paint.
- FACT : The kits sold at improvement stores say they are epoxy paint... Epoxy is NOT recommended for bathtubs and it does not take 3 days to dry like the directions on the kit call for.
- FACT : Oil based paint or Alkyd Paint can take 3 days to dry... hmmm.
- FACT : Painting a bathtub and refinishing a bathtub are NOT the same.
- FACT : Painting is applied on top of an old surface.
- FACT : Fusion Finish takes the refinishing a little further then other refinishers. Fusion Finish uses a polymer synthetic porcelain coating that penetrates the old surface through etching, so the end result is the fusion finish process chemically welds a new surface into, not on to the old surface. I have had other refinishers tell me my process is an overkill. They argue that with the bonding primers on the market there is no reason to etch into the old surface. Okay... however, I would rather do too much work to satisfy a customer rather than not enough!
- My Opinion : I separated this from fact because this part truly is my opinion. Bonding a new surface into the old surface has to last longer then simply bonding onto an old surface. My way of thinking is that when you bond into the old surface it then becomes a single new surface, when you bond to the old surface it is merely laying on top of the surface. I look at the original process used to produce a bathtub. Porcelain is fired at over 1800(F) to produce a hard durable surface. Anything I can do to get that new surface to become part of that old surface I am going to do it!
Bathtub refinishing and reglazing High gloss polymer glaze coating applied (7) coats thick after etching and priming the old surface so the Polymer glaze coat bonds Into the old surface NOT on top of the old surface like painting would do.
The life expectancy of the new surface is 15 - 20 years and at that time you could simply have the
Bathtub, shower or tile refinished again!
Why tear out perfectly good material and waste hard earned money when You can refinish the old to a like new appearance and save literally Thousands of dollars!
